Virat Kohli was shocked after being out by debutant Todd Murphy in one of the worst possible ways: Watch
Dinesh Karthik, who was in the commentary box when Virat Kohli was dismissed by Australia’s Todd Murphy, described it as “one of the worst possible ways”
Virat Kohli’s struggle against spin continued on Day 2 of the first Test against Australia in Nagpur when he was dismissed by debutant Todd Murphy in the first ball after lunch. Kohli, who came in to bat after Cheteshwar Pujara top-edged a sweep shot to a short fine leg in the morning session on Friday, hit a couple of confident straight drives for four runs before the break. But he was gone as soon as the second session began.
Murphy, who has been outstanding on his debut so far, would consider himself fortunate because the delivery he bowled to get Kohli out would not even come close to getting anyone out, let alone the former India captain, on most other days. The ball spun a little as it pitched around the leg stump. Kohli went for the flick shot and ended up tickling Australian keeper Alex Carey, who demonstrated great reflexes to hold on to a sharp catch despite a juggle.
Kohli walked back to the pavilion with his head down, having scored 12 off 26 balls as Australia began to mount a comeback in the Test match thanks to a debutant who took the top four Indian wickets.
When Kohli was dismissed, veteran Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik, who was in the commentary box, called it “one of the worst possible manners” for a batter to be out.
“There are many ways out, but this has to be one of the worst… strangle the leg on the side. He instinctively played the flick shot, but he nicked that one today. “Alex Carey made a fantastic catch,” Karthik said on commentary.
Virat Kohli is stunned by debutant Todd Murphy in the first Test between India and Australia.
India captain Rohit Sharma appeared to be the best batter in both teams’ displays. He resumed at 56 and went to Lunch at 85.
After hitting two boundaries and a six off veteran Australian opener Nathan Lyon, the second-wicket pair of Rohit and Ashwin added 40 runs in the first hour of play before Ashwin was trapped lbw for 23 from 62 balls (0-66).
While Lyon struggled with his line for the majority of the session, Murphy, 22, found more purchase.
Murphy had Cheteshwar Pujara (7) playing a loose shot and caught by Scott Boland at fine leg four overs after dismissing Ashwin.
