Shelly Oberoi of AAP wins Delhi Mayoral Election
Manish Sisodia congratulated Shelly Oberoi on her victory in the mayoral election shortly after the polls closed at the Civic Centre
Days after the Supreme Court ruled that nominated members will not participate in the voting process, Shelly Oberoi of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won the mayoral election on Wednesday. BJP candidate Rekha Gupta received 116 votes, compared to Oberoi’s 150. Manish Sisodia, the deputy chief minister of Delhi, congratulated Shelly Oberoi on her victory in the mayoral election, saying the “goons lost, the public won.”
“Many congratulations to all the workers on Aam Aadmi Party’s mayorship in Municipal Corporation of Delhi and once again heartfelt gratitude to the people of Delhi,” he said in a Hindi tweet. “Many congratulations to the first Mayor @OberoiShelly of AAP.”
Arvind Kejriwal, Delhi chief minister, and AAP national convener congratulated the people of Delhi on Oberoi’s victory in the mayoral elections, echoing Sisodia’s “goons lost, public won” phrase.
“The people of Delhi won today in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and hooliganism was defeated. Congratulations to the people of Delhi on the election of @OberoiShelly as mayor “He used Hindi to tweet.
Following the top court’s Friday ruling, Oberoi will now preside over the remaining polls, including those for the deputy mayor and six members of the powerful standing committee.
The office of the special officer was abolished with the election of the mayor. Between May 22, 2022, and February 22, 2023, special officer Ashwini Kumar was in charge of the deliberative wing.
Oberoi promised members that she will run the House per the Constitution and asked for their cooperation.
“I assure you that I will conduct this House per the Constitution. I expect you all to uphold the House’s dignity and contribute to its smooth operation “She stated this after being elected mayor.
The mayoral election was held in response to a Supreme Court order after three previous attempts to hold the polls were unsuccessful.
The AAP was a clear winner in the MCD elections last December 4, taking 134 wards and ending the BJP’s 15-year reign in the civic body. The BJP finished second with 104 wards, while the Congress received nine seats in the 250-member Municipal House.
