“It was an utter honor and privilege for me to serve as the Rajya Sevak or Rajyapal of such a wonderful” Governor of Maharashtra stated

The Governor of Maharashtra Bhagat Singh Koshyari, in an unexpected move, stated on Monday he has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and informed him that he wishes to be “discharged of all political responsibilities”.

Koshyari’s recent remarks about Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj dominated Maharashtra politics, with the opposition challenging the government led by Eknath Shinde. Shivaji Maharaj was recently described as a “hero of the past” by Koshyari, while BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi stated the Maratha warrior ruler asked for mercy from the Mughal empire.

“It was an absolute honor and privilege for me to serve as the Rajya Sevak or Rajyapal of such a wonderful State as Maharashtra – the land of Saints, Social reformers, and gallant soldiers,” Koshyari said in a statement.

“I can never forget the love and devotion I have got from the people of Maharashtra throughout the last little more than 3 years. During the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s recent visit to Mumbai, I expressed to him my desire to be relieved of all political responsibilities and spend the rest of my life reading, writing, and doing other things. I have always felt loved and cared for by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, and I hope to feel the same in this regard.” Koshyari stated.

Protests erupted across Maharashtra in response to the governor’s remarks. In a show of strength, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction), NCP, Congress, and other opposition parties staged a major Halla Bol morcha in Mumbai in December against the Eknath Shinde-BJP alliance administration, seeking Koshyari’s oyster.
