Murat Uzunmehmet, the player’s agent, confirmed the death of Christian Atsu, a former Porto, Chelsea, Málaga, and Newcastle player

Ghana national player and former Newcastle midfielder Christian Atsu was found dead beneath the wreckage of his home in Turkey, local media reported Saturday, citing his manager.

Murat Uzunmehmet, his Turkish manager, told the DHA news agency on Saturday that his body had been discovered under rubble in the Turkish southern province of Hatay.

Atsu began his professional career in 2011 with FC Porto before joining Premier League giants Chelsea two years later. While he did not make a league appearance for the club, Atsu had loan spells with Everton, Bournemouth, and Newcastle before joining the Magpies in 2017.

“Atsu’s lifeless body was discovered beneath the rubble. Currently, more items are being removed. “His phone was also discovered,” Uzunmehmet said to reporters in Hatay, where the athlete’s body was discovered.

Thousands of structures in Turkey were reduced to rubble, including multi-story apartment buildings full of residents.

Nana Sechere, the agent of Ghanaian footballer Christian Atsu, tweeted: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce to all well-wishers that sadly Christian Atsu’s body was recovered this morning.” My heartfelt sympathies go out to his family and loved ones. I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to everyone for their prayers and support.”

“I ask that everyone would kindly respect the privacy of the family of the player during this very difficult time while we make the necessary arrangements.”

Christian Atsu signed with Hatayspor, a Turkish Super Lig club based in the southern province of Hatay near the epicenter of Turkey’s massive earthquake, in September.

Atsu was scheduled to leave southern Turkey hours before the earthquake, but Hatayspor’s manager said on Friday that the Ghanaian chose to stay with the club after scoring the game-winning goal in a Super Lig match on February 5.
